Who you chose as a life partner may have a lasting effect on your health. That’s according to a new study.

I always say “A happy wife is a happy life”, and this new study backs me up. Nearly 2,000 couples ages 50 and older were followed over 6 years.   Those who had happy spouses were more likely to report better health. And a partner’s positive outlook could encourage improvement in one’s own happiness as well.

Happy people are generally healthy people. Their habits and outlook on life can directly affect their spouses.  Researchers found participants with happy partners were more likely to exercise more often, experience less physical impairment, eat better and get a good night’s sleep.

40% of marriages end in divorce. I’m lucky to be married to a positive happy woman. My wife is one of my biggest supporters but marriage can be difficult sometimes even for the happiest of couples. So here are my prescriptions:

1. Communication Is Key
Make time to check in with each other on a regular basis.

2. Healthy Couples Don’t Avoid Conflict
Talking it out helps stop resentments and lowers cortisol levels. Be sure to be respectful when opinions clash.

3. Exercise Together
Studies show couple working out together are more satisfied with their marriage.

4. If You Need Help, Seek Counseling
A professional’s opinion can help find common ground and find ways to get beyond any conflict.

Having a happy spouse probably makes you better at finding ways to cope when life gets you down.
It certainly helps when life doesn’t go the way you want it to. You’re less likely to turn to self-destructive outlets like drinking and drugs.
