SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) — We all know it’s better to give than to receive. That is why our WXYZ family is continuing our ‘Giving Tree’ tradition.
Every year, our employees donate toys, gloves, diapers and other necessities to children in need in Metro Detroit.
VP/General Manager of WXYZ & WMYD Mike Murri said, “This is a wonderful tradition at Channel 7 and TV20.”
It’s the most wonderful time of the year and the employees at Broadcast House know it.
“So passionate, they care so much and to be able to give back is a great tradition and we are so proud to be able to do this.”
WXYZ ‘elves’ were happy to present the presents to the Children’s Center in Midtown.
Jon Carolin of the Children’s Center said, “Even Santa needs a little help.”
They have been collecting donations to provide gifts to more than 1,500 children.
The idea a child would wake up Christmas morning without a gift under the tree is something many folks don’t want to imagine.
“Because they are in a situation that’s out of their control,” Carolin explained. ‘Between a basic need item and providing a wonderful holiday is a really real choice that our families would have to make.”
On Monday, parents will arrive to the Children’s Center and start shopping for their little ones.
“They pick out a toy item, stocking stuffer, hat and gloves for each child. They get a blanket for the family and they get a gift card for a holiday meal,” Carolin added. “Our families, many of them are going through a really hard time and they may not have some of the basic need items.”
Once they pick out the items, they can wrap them in a room next door.
“Helping our families and our kids have the best holiday that they can possibly have,” Carolin said.
The parents leave knowing they can provide a Merry Christmas to their family.
Murri added, “Well, we can help Santa in some small way, make sure that every child has a great holiday.”
