(WXYZ) — A criminal complaint has been filed against an Ypsilanti resident arrested for allegedly stealing confidential documents and technical data from his Michigan employer and sending that information to multiple people in Iran.
Between January 2015 and about June 2016, Amin Hasanzadeh, an Iranian-born citizen who became a permanent U.S. resident, stole the confidential information and sent that information via the internet to people, including his brother, in Iran.
Additionally, court document allege Amin committed fraud with the misuse of visas, permits and other documents, by "concealing his military affiliation in Iran from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service officials and providing false statements on his I-485 Legal Resident (LPR) and N-400 Citizenship applications." The defendant allegedly signed these documents under penalty of perjury.
Amin has a PHD and master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Iran. He also served in the Iranian military, according to the FBI's investigation.
The 14-page criminal complaint also reveals that Amin's brother, Sina, who is an electrical engineer as well, worked with several Iranian companies tied to nuclear weapons.
Federal sources tell 7 Action News this case is in the early stages and that additional charges of espionage or treason could be issued later.
We could learn more about the case and the evidence as it goes to federal court in Downtown Detroit Friday afternoon for a hearing. Hasanzadeh is being held in custody.
A statement from the FBI is below:
""Because this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot provide any information outside of what appears in the complaint. However, we want to assure the public that the FBI has no concerns about a current threat to the safety of the United States."
