TV20 Detroit live streamed video of the Detroit Branch NAACP’s 61st Annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner on Sunday, May 1, from the Cobo Convention Center in downtown Detroit.
The live stream included remarks from the keynote speaker, former U.S. Secretary of State and current candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton. This is the second time Clinton will be the event’s keynote speaker. She spoke at the event as a United States senator in 2004.

“WMYD-TV20 is proud to celebrate the Detroit Branch NAACP and the tremendous impact it has had on the lives of those in our community,” said Mike Murri, WXYZ/WMYD vice president and general manager. “We are pleased to partner with the NAACP to bring this important live event to our community and the region.”
The theme of this year’s dinner is “Let America Be America Again.” The dinner is the largest fundraiser for the Detroit Branch NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. Approximately 10,000 people attend the event each year.
“The Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner is more than just a dinner,” said Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, president, Detroit Branch NAACP. “It is an iconic assembly of diverse people assembled to engage the very critical issues that confront our times. The streaming of this historic event by WMYD will provide a special opportunity to bring energy, advocacy and focus to people and principles that make a significant difference.”
During the event, the “Great Expectations Awards” will be given to Detroit City Council member Mary Sheffield, and author and writer Shaka Senghor. State Sen. Goeff Hansen (R-Michigan) and Ivy Bailey, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers will receive the “Mary Church Terrell and Ida B. Wells Barnett Freedom & Justice Awards.” The “Lifetime Achievement Award” will be presented to Rep. James Clyburn (D-South Carolina).
