Falling temperatures outside mean busy furnace repairmen inside our homes

As the temperatures drop, you might be surprised by the solution to one of the most common repair calls.

It’s the busy time of year for heating companies.

"We become very busy when the temperatures start to drop,” said Jacob Gregg, the owner of Jacob’s Ladder Heating & Cooling.

Your home isn’t like refrigerator when the power goes out, the heat won’t stay in if you just don’t open the door.

"The home I just came from, it had dropped down to 55 degrees and they called me an hour and a half before that,” said Gregg.

Which means, you’ll want to get a repair technician out quickly.

"If it's getting colder and out call won't be until later, turn the water off and make sure you have your water pipes drained,” said Gregg.

Some of the worst problems he sees in furnaces are when the blower motor goes bad or when there are pests in the home.

"In the exhaust pipes you'll have birds or rodents that get down into them and that can either cause fire or carbon monoxide to get into the home,” said Gregg.

He said one of the most common problems he sees, is actually just user error.

"Oddly enough the most common problems either the air filter that people forget to change, a thermostat that has gone bad or even more ridiculous, the power switch has been turned off mistakenly,” said Gregg.

So double check your power switch before calling a professional.
