(WXYZ) — A new poll found a majority of Michigan voters support Gov. Whitmer's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Detroit Regional Chamber released the statewide poll of registered voters in Michigan on Wednesday after previous polls the month before.

“As the State’s ‘Stay at Home’ Executive Order slowly begins to lift, and with evidence of growing frustration with these orders from some quarters, the Chamber wanted to provide employers of all types and sizes a clearer picture of employees’ comfort returning to work and their view of the order,” said Sandy K. Baruah, President of CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber.

According to the poll, 63.7% of voters approve of Whitmer's handling of the pandemic – including 44.7% who strongly approve. 32.8% of people disapprove of the governor's handling.

When it comes to the reopening of the economy, 71.7% support gradually reopening to avoid a second wave, and 66.8% of people believe Michigan's response to the crisis made sense.

While most support, the pandemic has become quite partisan.

70.4% of people who identify as Strong Republican believe the COVID-19 threat has been exaggerated, compared to 32.2% of all voters.

More than half of the polled voters disapprove of President Donald Trump's handling of the pandemic. 50.4% disapprove with 43.2% strongly disapproving, while 42.8% approve with 27% strongly approving.

90.2% of Democratic voters disapprove of his performance but 87.4% of Republicans approve.

Michiganders also said they will approach re-engaging the economy gradually, and ranked 13 different locations using a scale of 1-10 points.

They were asked if the location was to open next week, how comfortable would they be going to the place, with 10 being most comfortable and one being least comfortable.
