DPD bike unit ramping up for summer patrols

We’re going behind the scenes as a newly revamped Detroit police unit hits the streets just in time for summer.

They are the humble heroes of the motor city: sworn police officers committed to making a difference.

Today, a group of DPD's finest invited us for an exclusive ride along as they trained for a new assignment.

This summer roughly a hundred police officers will patrol all over the city on bicycles.

In each neighborhood, each precinct, you'll see them keeping us safe.

Although the program dates back to 1995, this increased bike presence is part of an emphasis on putting communities first.

In southwest Detroit, the training includes overcoming an obstacle course.

Ultimately the newly trained team will be an integral part of the city's comeback.
