MHS offering reward after dog found in trash can

Posted

The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for leaving a young Pomeranian mix dog in a garbage can in the 19000 block of Harned on Detroit’s east side.

The MHS Rescue Department received a call on Monday, Nov. 30 from a concerned citizen who saw the dog in the garbage can and was unsure if he was still alive. The MHS rescue driver arrived at the scene around 8:15 a.m. and saw the dog was covered in frost and not moving. He was suffering and barely clinging to life. The rescue driver wrapped the dog in a blanket and rushed him to the MHS Detroit Center for Animal Care for immediate medical attention.

In spite of the veterinary team’s best efforts to help the dog recover, his suffering was too great. The heartbreaking decision was made to end his suffering, and he was humanely euthanized.

“It was obvious that someone put the dog in the trash can there is no way he got in there by himself,” said Debby MacDonald, MHS Chief Cruelty Investigator. “It’s unacceptable, and it needs to be unacceptable to us as a community. We need to be a voice for these animals, we need to take action to make sure this doesn’t happen again. While we are devastated by this tragedy, we need to make sure the person who is responsible for this is brought to justice.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Michigan Humane Society Cruelty Investigation Department at (313) 872-3401.
