TRENTON, Mich. (WXYZ) — The holiday season is the time of year to add a little extra sparkle and shine to gifts using glitter. One Trenton woman is doing her part to help the environment at the same time.

“It’s just as shiny, it’s just as sparkly, it’s just as fulfilling as regular glitter,” said Brittainy Martin.

Martin has started her own company called The Good Glitter, selling biodegradable glitter. Regular glitter made out of plastics can take thousands of years to disappear from the environment. The glitter Martin sells takes 28 to 90 days to dissolve once mixed with water.

“It breaks down naturally in waterways or ecosystems where there are bacteria or enzymes that break down waste products, they will also break down this glitter,” said Martin.

Martin got the idea to sell this glitter through her two daughters. Especially her 4-year-old daughter, Gwendolyn, who sported a Renaissance dress packed with glitter.

“As I am vacuuming it up, I am thinking this is such a waste,” said Martin.

She started researching and found a bio-degradable glitter made in the United Kingdom called “Eco Glitter Fun." Martin partnered up to help import the product here to the United States.

The glitter, made out of eucalyptus, is sold to people making products like candles and bath bombs. Martin says she also sells the glitter for makeup artists to use.

Martin has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for her business. For every dollar donated, she says she will plant a wildflower.
