HUNTINGTON WOODS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Could this year be the last time Huntington Woods will have a fireworks show for Fourth of July?

Town officials hope not. That is why they are turning to a crowdfunding campaign.

Mary Gustafson is the town's Parks and recreation director. She’s watched the fireworks on Fourth of July since she was a kid.

“It’s huge. The entire community comes out.”

The town usually gets funding from their annual ‘Run, Walk, Boom’ 5k event, which takes place this weekend.

The fireworks budget has been shrinking for years. It has been hard raising money though sponsors. Then someone had a bright idea...

Mary said, “Let’s try a GoFundMe and see what we can do.”

This year’s fireworks show cost $16,000 and has been paid for, but going forward is their concern.

While next year’s show is in limbo, some folks say they will consider donating. Tiffany May enjoys the fireworks.

“I think it’s great that they’re still being able to put on something like that for the town but I also think it’s kind of sad that they have to resort to a GoFundMe page,” she said.

The town is asking for $10,000 on the page and so far raised a little more than $1,000.

Mary added, “Really has been slow. I don’t know if we haven’t gotten the word out enough. Hopefully, this will help.”
