WATERFORD, Mich. (WXYZ) — "It's a miracle to me," said 78-year-old Lloyd Stiverson as he stood on his porch, trying hard to let everything he had just heard sink in.
Stiverson's neighbor, John Cummings from across the street, had just knocked on his door and told him something he could never have imagined.
"They're putting a new roof on your house for ya," said Cummings as he pointed to several people who walked across the street with him, including Kathryn Castiglione from L & S Home Improvements who was holding about a half dozen balloons when she told Stiverson that they would be putting a new roof on his Waterford home next week at no cost.
Lloyd Stiverson and his wife, Mary Anne, are both retired and have a lot on their plate, including Lloyd's cancer, for which he's undergoing chemotherapy, and his bad heart that has 13 stents, a pacemaker, and a defibrillator.
L & S Home Improvements is based in Warren and several months ago Cummings hired them to put a new roof on his own home.
Cummings was so impressed by the work that he decided to ask if they ever help others with a free roof.
The sales rep for the roofing and siding company told Cummings to write to Kathryn Castiglione and Adam Conklin.
Conklin, the owner of L & S Home Improvements, said they had been looking for someone they believed was really in need of a new roof and they agreed that the Stiversons could really use their help.
"It's heartwarming," said Conklin. "Makes me feel good."
Dane Ligon of SRS Distribution also came to surprise the Stiversons Friday.
SRS Distribution is a building materials distributor and they are donating all of the supplies needed to give the Stiversons a new roof.
"I pray like crazy," Mr. Stiverson said. "Well, they're getting answered."
Work on the new roof is set to start in about a week. Conklin said it will take about eight hours to complete.
